by VT Art Salon
Location: VT Art Salon
Artist(s): Hai-Hsin HUANG
Date: 17 Jan - 14 Feb 2015

"Festive moments always comes with the subsequent moments of loss. Loneliness is hidden in those happy moments, like having disturbing secrets."

Huang Hai Hsin, born 1984 in Taipei, Taiwan, graduated from Fine Art Degree in the National Taipei University of Education, after graduation she attended the School of Visual Arts in New York, currently living and working in New York. 2011 is nominated for the Taipei Art Award. Recent exhibitions include: “Home, Sweet Home”, in Project Fulfill Art Space, Taipei, “True Illusion, Illusory Truth—Contemporary Art Beyond Ordinary Experience” in Taipei Fine Arts Museum, “The Moving Boundary” in Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art, Israel, and “The People's Republic of China---Republic Without People”, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts.

"The Horror of Happiness" is the second solo exhibition in VT Artsalon for Huang Hai Hsin following her first “Wordless Ending” in 2011, in “The Horror of Happiness” Huang draws attention to absurd moments in life which she is sensitive to. Highlighting on the mundane moments and things that we take for granted, showing it is in fact not normal, and our casual acceptance to their existence. Huang Hai Hsin purposely arranges scenes in the paintings where the moments are revealed. Suddenly these scenes we are all familiar with, reveal their comical side, and the so-called impression of belonging to a place or a feeling, is composed of numerous fragments of these scenes.

Huang Hai Hsin primarily focused on the modern society, the mass media, the public nature of these image, especially images from the official institutions, such as: government, schools, hospitals, prisons ... and so on, the release of those politically correct image and things taken for granted in everyday life, discover the subtly hidden absurdity, anxiety, humor ....

In the past Huang has used the images from the press as painting materials to capture the so-called emptiness and reality of politics. Also images from books, medical journal or briefing papers, where it is reasonable to say are decent and serious moments, but under the brush strokes of Huang actually revealed a sinister gloomy atmosphere. For Huang Hai Hsin, art is the sarcastic interpretation of the sad reality. She said: "I think it is important to make people smile in a helpless manner, revealing a sense of helplessness, only thing to do is to accept the current state as it is, this is more like real life."
