Balcony City Civilization Quotation ─ Lin Shu-Kai Solo Exhibition
by VT Art Salon
Location: VT Artsalon
Artist(s): LIN Shu-Kai
Date: 4 Oct - 1 Nov 2014

Shu-Kai Lin born 1984 in Tainan Taiwan, received his BFA at the Taipei National University of the Arts, and MFA from the Taipei National University of the Arts, currently living and working in Tainan. This time in VT Artsalon the "Balcony City Civilization Quotation ─ Lin Shu-Kai Solo Exhibition" present a series of works by Lin Shu-Kai concerning his personal life experiences and reproducing historical connections, concealing various symbols of civilization within the works, projecting the internalized objects and imagination of the artist. From the repeatedly stacked structures of the civilized world, the artist tries to create a surreal but at the same time real emotions and memories of cityscape, the self-believed totem system is transformed into a fable-like map, discretely reflects Lin Shu-Kai’s imagination of home.

Just like the exhibition title "Balcony City Civilization Quotation" in the "Balcony City Series - Urban Civilization and Island" series, projected on the image are the view of the city in an unrestrained imagination, crowded city present course that gives a unique way to life, to create a past, present and future which coexist together on the stage. Artists return to the most direct state of relationship between the individual and the city, from the use of equipment and materials used by his father at work, in the "balcony of urban civilization Quotations - Bricks City Quotations" series, using molds from woodworking techniques used in traditional industry, constructing a cityscape that constitutes the impression of traditional craftsmanship and Lin Shu-Kai’s family heritage in this constructed utopian world, in this series a organic style dialogue between the different sections of the city, leading the viewer to see at a unfamiliar perspective, and reflect from their memory, creating a connection between people and space.

In 2007 Lin was nominated for Scholarship of Zhang Xin-Long award, and in 2011 held a solo exhibition in the Life Science Library, Academia Sinica , he has exhibited in various locations around the world including, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Japan, Korea, Germany, etc. During 2013 Lin has been a residency artist in GlogauAIR, Berlin, Germany. His works has been collected by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.
