Just Clowning Around
by VT Art Salon
Location: VT Art Salon
Artist(s): WANG Chien-Hao
Date: 8 Mar - 5 Apr 2014

Wang Chien-Hao born 1984 in Taichung Taiwan, received his BA at the National Changhua University of Education, and MFA from the Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts, Tainan National University of The Arts, currently living and working in Taichung. In 2008 and 2009 Wang was nominated for the Taipei Arts Awards, and in 2011 held a solo exhibition in the Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, and was invited to be the in-store residency artist in the Art Studio of Eslite Hsin-Yi Store where he held the solo exhibition “The Answer Is ( ).”

Wang’s main concepts behind his works often originate from the everyday life, and using his witty sense of humor to express his response to the surrounding environment and life.  Through the mass majority expectation of the ideal home, commenting on the omnipresence of today’s media, the series 'micro landscape' featured small (almost film sized) photograph where the viewers have walk right up to the works to view, the seemingly ordinary scenes contains the deliberate mishaps created by the artist, adding to the charm of the viewing experience, also allowing viewers to re-think the scenery of everyday life.

This time “Just Clowning Around” showing in VT Artsalon can be further categorized into 3 series features paintings, photography and installation works. The paintings are a satire take on abstract and minimalist paintings, using overly simplified composition to depict his everyday life experience, and uses humor and seemingly effortless way to express his personal feelings for arts. In the “Landscape” photographic series, Wang select mundane scenes with ordinary everyday objects and contrasting colors, creating a strange and awkward composition and atmosphere, providing viewers the perspective Wand selects to see Taiwan. The installations works on the other hand provide everyday objects a different form, using intuitive puns and jokes to give these objects another definition, commenting through experiences from everyday life and witty humor to express the powerlessness of life.
