Lonely island, A self-portrait
by VT Art Salon
Location: VT Art Salon
Artist(s): LIN Chien Jung
Date: 16 Nov - 14 Dec 2013

Lin Chien-Jung, born 1970, graduated from the Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts, Tainan National University of The Arts, is currently a lecturer at Feng Chia University. Lin Chien-Jung is one of the top spatial installation artists in Taiwan, an expert in incorporating light within sculptural installations. In 2002 Lin was selected by the Ministry of Culture to participate in a residency program in Gasworks Studio, in London, UK. 2004 selected by the Asian Cultural Council to participate in the residency program hosted by ARCUS Studio, Japan, in 2009 Lin was selected by Ministry of Culture for the residency program in the Watermill Center in USA, and many others over the years, his iconic works of the light bulb man are collected by institutions around the world, and permanently displayed as public art in various locations.

This time Lin brings to VT Artsalon his solo exhibition “Lonely Island, A self-portrait”, where He combines light and sculptural installations to create technological art works using new media. Different to the well-known and recognized light bulb man series, this new series features gradually brightening and dimming lights in repeating cycles, from the repeating motions the works contemplate on the everyday life; using island, rock formations, lights and the artist’s own reflection of his current state of mind, Lin shapes and rebuilds a new form from his work. In the moving and glowing island we can almost see the whispers of the artist within the chaos, and his search for the realization of a state of mind.

Lin uses glowing sculptural works to visualize the aspects of everyday life that words alone cannot described. Though the mimicking objects and surrounding installations, Lin builds self-reflective objects. This new series of work progresses from the previous light bulb man, retaining the childlike playfulness and atmosphere, but at the same time includes a slight awkwardness and almost emptiness. Exploring the situation when you are forced to face with yourself or face with others, as well as the distanced feelings with the surroundings, all in the attempt to further understand and analyses yourself. Under the busy life of the outside, slow down and listen to the whispers within, experience the moment of realizing a self-depiction within the heart.
