Irrational Nmber
by VT Art Salon
Location: VT Art Salon
Artist(s): HUANG Ko-wei
Date: 12 Oct - 9 Nov 2013

Huang Ko Wei, born 1988, currently studying in MFA Fine Arts course in the Taipei National University of the Arts, living and working in Taipei. Huang uses his works to investigate the possibilities of painting and photography; in this exhibition the main theme circles around the questions about of conflicting properties of paintings, the inseparable nature of original work and reproductions prints, and the distance between seeing and facing death.

Irrational Nmber exhibition will be held in VT Artsalon. Using thick and heavy brush strokes to present natural scenery and birds, Huang also include collage technique into the image, through paint achieving a new form of juxtaposing and layering. In the picture the artist allows abstract brush strokes and colors to roam the surface of the image, the movement color into layers offers the picture overall a sense of detachment from reality, almost chaotic but at the same time revealing a little bit of seriousness, leaving a traceable path from the accurate still life drawing.

Different to the previous “Post Paradise“ series, this time Huang no longer focus on trying to recreate realistic images, but using an overly sweet and thick paint marks to describe animal specimens and the qualities of death, the main subject of the painting are the carcasses of birds, and creating a distanced feel to photography. Also through this process question the tension and entanglement between photography and painting, the ambiguous division between reproduction prints and original works of art; through painting reexamine the distance and the familiarity of the world, attempting to question painting using painting and searching for its true quality.
