by VT Art Salon
Location: VT Art Salon
Artist(s): LIAO Chien-Chung
Date: 20 Apr - 18 May 2013

"Surface Engineering Method of 2013" follows on with the Surface Engineering Method series. In the exhibition Liao intends to explore the balance of power and statue between: real objects and Liao's objects which mimic the real, this is achieved through detaitled recreation at the same time retaining his usual hint of lightheartedness. According to Liao's works featured in "Surface Engineering Method of 2013" are intended to be independent incidents and viewers should not derive on the relationships between individual works.

This exhibition features 3 large sculptural installations, Forklift, Great White Shark and Speaker Ball. The Forklift is modeled after the one in service in Taipei National University of the Arts, Liao created a 1:1 scale model of the large vehicle which displays all the exterior similarities however provides no actual functions; on top of the functionless vehicle is a bubble wrapped sculpture art work. Great White Shark is a 4 meter long Shark model displaying the familiar form which is considered to be a frightening sight, but under close examination the huge mouth on the Great White Shark contains not a single tooth. Liao record and documents himself interacting with this frightening creature that has no teeth, demonstrating a unique balance of power and status. Speaker Ball is a 32 sided spherical shape featuring 30 speakers, creating an alien object similar to the compound eye of a fly. Each of the 30 speakers play a different sound track, hence viewers are exposed to a mixture of 30 tracks, creating a chaotic noise, however as you approach a specific speaker, a fine change is observed as the sound become focused.

To Liao his recreation of real life objects are his sketches of reality, these sketches contain varies techniques that reveal his sense of humor and rebellious mind, also presenting a sense of hopelessness toward current society and desires. The playful works Liao created became his own personal form of reimbursement to the real world. Inside the white walls of the gallery viewers will find these objects of huge majesty as if they are the unmissable and unmovable reality.
