ESLITE GALLERY will hold WANG Yuping’s first solo show “Taipei‧ Beijing” in Taiwan from March
2nd – April 7th, 2013. Most works are created exclusively for this exhibition during a one month
stay in Taipei where he captured the winter and rain in the streets of Danshui and Western Taipei,
as well as recorded Taiwanese cuisine. In addition, he will also exhibit paintings and watercolors
from Beijing.
WANG often mixes acrylic paint with oil pastel or oil paint on handmade paper that radiates loose,
dynamic, and random blocks of warm color. In terms of subjects, unlike many artists from the
same generation, WANG was not influenced by German Expressionism to engage in a larger
narrative, but instead, he chose to savor the good things found in daily life. This is similar to the
“ukiyo-e world” where pictures were based on the depictions of daily chores and returning them
back into pristine beauty. It is an en plein air diary recorded with literati care.
WANG harbors deep feelings towards the Beijing landscape in which he was born and raised.
Regarding his paintings and the sultry moods that his mind naturally expresses, he says: “I carry
my easel, brushes and paint, wandering blindly throughout the city like a child that first learned
to paint. Without a thought or worry, I could paint anywhere in any way that I chose, painting well
or badly did not matter. This is just a way to look at the past, pass time in the present, as well
as a chance to bask in the sun.” In recent years, his subjects have ranged from remnants of old
Beijing during the four different seasons to small scattered objects of daily life, such as books,
bottles and cans, typewriters, corks, etc.. They all without exception exude warmth and simplicity,
with a hint of loneliness. There are no straight lines, precise shapes, or specific perspectives
in WANG’s paintings – all images are simplified into blurs of saturated pure colors that looked
repeated stroked and played with. For WANG, en plein air painting allows him to fulfill his desire
for communication with surrounding life, as well as a contemporary artist’s constant pursuit of
reflection in language and style.
