Artist(s): Chwen KUO
Date: 10 Sep - 16 Oct 2011
ESLITE GALLERY presents a solo exhibition for the late artist KUO Chwen that will run from 10 September to 16 October 2011. It will feature paintings from the artist’s later period. KUO Chwen’s earlier paintings often carry an unusual and dream-like quality, with gigantic insects or animals invading familiar buildings and spaces. The dramatic staging was carefully arranged to communicate the artist’s criticism on social and political observations or lament over human foibles. His recent works, however, are more abstract. Although animals are still often used, KUO’s central subject has become skeletons that represent the true nature of man with themes centered more on an interpretation and expression of his inner thoughts and feelings. KUO’s preference for painting bones may mean that although he creates a photo-realistic effect in his paintings, he would rather penetrate deeper past the skin in his works, to explore the human mind and its states. His final period of work occurred as he prepared for his second exhibition with ESLITE in 2007 - creation defined KUO’s life and destiny, even as he was struggling with his health. This exhibition will focus on his skeletal works, which contain a valuable internal journey where one experiences a free mind and spiritual cleansing.
