Lonely Park
by Asia Art Center
Location: Asia Art Center, Taipei
Artist(s): Tomokazu HIROE
Date: 13 Nov - 12 Dec 2010

How long haven’t you spent time for enjoying the blue sky and white clouds? Does it seem like there is no time for thinking over the ideas for your life or what your expectations about life are? Don’t forget that it is necessary to leave some space in life in order to truly experience fun in life! Tomokazu Hiroe, a well-known Japanese artist, inspired from traditional Japanese painting with the philosophy of blank, creats a dream garden for those busy people in the modern city. In November, Asia Art Center will present the new works of Tomokazu Hiroe for you to relax.

Tomokazu Hiroe creates still life paintings of toys and dolls with white background. The motifs are given precise positions and realistically described, and then he brings a story to the painting by drawing a red line. This line is a representation of a different dimension from what is already seen and painted in the picture. It leads a viewer to imagine and evoke inner thoughts and emotions that are not consciously perceived in usual. It is said that painting is an illusion, and Hiroe paints both what exists in reality and what exists only in our thoughts on the same surface to question about the relationship between being and nothingness. It is seemed that Hiroe paints nothing to make any kinds of imagination happen in his works. Hiroe dexterously combines minimized essences from opposed elements such as three-dimensional and two-dimensional expressions, Western and Eastern art techniques, oil paint and plastic layer to realize a great theme of “space of nothingness”.

For this exhibition “Lonely Park”, toys of dinosaurs, monkey and lion are chosen to be motifs and red lines contour cages, tree branches and flaming hoop are added to bring up unusual sceneries from spectacular shows such as circus. There are also other works with plastic trees, a boy and a girl dolls and animal figures that could relate to many different views in forest or abundant places. It is a magic of Tomokazu Hiroe to take new stories out of nowhere.
