“URBAN LANDSCAPE,” presented by Nou Gallery, is Katsumi Hayakawa’s first solo exhibition in Taiwan. Among the 15 exhibiting paper-made works in the exhibition “URBAN LANDSCAPE,” there are 12 works particularly made for the exhibition in this spring. It is amazing that such a plain material can be transformed into a fantasy-like visual experience through accumulation. Katsumi Hayakawa’s artistic practice “does not mean to depict an object, but expresses my own experience with my surroundings, with the world,” says the artist.
Echoing the urban scenes in Katsumi Hayakawa’s artworks and the connection among the people living in the city, the main purpose of the project is “the accumulated participation” – just like LEGO which welcomes everyone to take part in. Such a belief thus becomes the starting point of the event, inviting viewers to build up their dream house in their fantasy with the “paper bricks” provided. The interactive project offers a response to the artistic concept of the exhibition and the exhibiting works. Additionally, it serves as the working progress and the documentation of the event. The participation of the public, meanwhile, unnoticeably helps to organize the fellowship in the city, signifying the relationship among those people in a changing society and their co-relation with the surroundings.
