Crescendo Prelude
by Nou Gallery
Location: Nou Gallery
Artist(s): TSENG Yu-Chin
Date: 19 Nov - 24 Dec 2011

For Nou Gallery's year-end exhibition, artist Tseng Yu-Chin is returning from a two-year with the first piece "Confession" of his series. Since 2007's Kassel Documenta exhibit, Tseng's distinctive video works and mature creative language have made him a focus of the international art world. The current exhibit at Nou Gallery will overturn viewers' deepest expectations, unveiling new creative themes and innovative visual narrative techniques, marking the most important milestone in this artist's 10-year creative career.

Consisting of 25 photographs and two video recordings, "Confession" has the artist following the scenery of daily life through traditional markets and modern supermarkets, capturing momentary aspects of individual personality through a distinctive series of image post-processing techniques. Tseng has said: "Although I once rejected digital techniques in the creative practices, I gradually realized that artistic creativity is just this; indeed, this is now our whole world, it has all been digitized." To return to the essence of the visual medium recaptures use of the most natural narrative tone in sketching a story, with the camera replacing our eyes scanning the world; yet Tseng's capture of this world also retains and undercurrent of indifference and gloom.

Tseng Yu-Chin has recently become one of Taiwan's most internationally sought-after contemporary artists on the international scene; in 2007, being the age of 29, he had already gained international recognition with his works' appearance at the Kassel Documenta in Germany, becoming the only Taiwanese artist invited in this past half-century. He also exhibited in numerous top-ranked galleries/institutions includes Jeu de Paume, Paris, Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, Canada, Today Art Museum, Beijing, Shanghai Art Museum ,among others. In 2008 he was based in New York's Location One, and won the CCAA Chinese Contemporary Art Award that year in the "Best Young Artist" category. Tseng now lives in Taipei.
