The Sixth Dimensional city is a series of expanded cinematic events that interrogate notions of place, space, time and memory. The current work-in-progress explores the notion of power in Taipei from the vantage point of a distanced observer (non-local). This project is based at a Substation called The Arrow, The Arrow gives direction to the data collected during interviews at The Orchid Substation. We hoped to find hidden sub-stations in Taipei, but the data collected from the interviewees created an incomplete listing of power centres; leaving us still in the dark. As a strategy to uncover these hidden sub-stations we have employed the now ancient technology of the ‘magic lantern’; previously this was used in phantasmagoria shows in 18th century Paris. Spirits of the dead were made to appear to move on the walls of a chapel by a device comprising of a magic lantern placed on top of a cart. The point of observation from a moving cart metaphorically represents our position and the magic lantern highlights and reveals symbolic forms of personal power and powerlessness.
