Hsiang-Ming Chang(1933-2000)
Hsiang-Ming Chang was born in Taipei Yong-le Ting in 1933. In the end of the 70’s, Hsiang-Ming Chang and Wan-Chuan Chang established “Bei Bei Art Studio”. The two were friends and teachers to each other. Hsiang-Ming Chang favored Old Taipei streets, old houses and the history, particularly of the people and impressions of Dadaocheng. He carried in his mission to record the splendor of old Taipei with his paint brushes.
Chang’s work expresses a deep care for humanity. Old streets are not just passages from the old times which have since lost their glamour. The yellow earth under the asphalt pavement carried the sweat and endeavor of the past generations, it also born the memories those who grew up there. Though the old streets were either demolished or moved, the collective memories of Old Taipei will reach our time through Hsiang-Ming Chang’s paintings. The past glories created by hardship and community become timeless classics through his work.
