Location: Kalos Gallery
Artist(s): JU Ming
Date: 23 Oct 2010 - 30 Jan 2011

The grand opening of Kalos Gallery Dunnan branch will be held on 23rd October, the first exhibition will be the whole series exhibit of Ju Ming’s “Living World Series – Swimming (Stainless Steel)”. Ju Ming has been working on Living World Series for over thirty years. The series contains his deep and eager concern about human living, society and future generation. He applies diverse materials in art with experimental spirit, creates in variety of themes with fully interest, and exceeds himself in endless challenges. We can see his principle of practicing art in the daily life throughout his entire series artworks.

Swimming is the most delicate artwork of the Living World Series. Ju Ming carved the styrofoam as a mold and casted with stainless steel to make statues. He used to preserve the original texture of carved layer, but this time he conversely polished the surface to restore stainless steel’s reflection function and glossy appearance. Th shinning glory on the sculpture made them like just came out from water. The glossy polished stainless steel and rough white styrofoam texture comprise a visual conflict to the audience. Ju Ming froze their actions into poses: the girls are stretching bodies, enjoying sunshine, and some of them even look like they are going to jump into the pool. But Ju Ming once said although the name of the work is “swimming”, none of them are actually ‘swimming’. The Swimming fully implicated modernity and futurity through the material applying and art concepts expressing, also, it reveals Ju Ming’s endless pursuit in art and endeavor in his art career.
