Location: Project Fulfill Art Space (PF Art Space)
Artist(s): Hiraki SAWA
Date: 11 Apr - 16 May 2015

Project Fulfill Art Space is pleased to present “TERRAIN” by Hiraki Sawa from April 11th to May 16th, 2015. This will be his first solo exhibition in Taiwan. Sawa’s recent works including one video installation, four video works, and drawings will be shown in the exhibition.

Hiraki Sawa often blends realist images of, for example, aircrafts and carousels with dreamlike scenes in his video artworks. Adopting a unique style of creation, he not only presents pretty fantastic and poetic fragments of his quotidian life but also explores the chaotic state amidst memories and realities. His early works attracted considerable attention and discussion, and were exhibited in various international biennials and triennials as well as in Taipei Fine Arts Museum and National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. As a result, the Taiwanese audience is no stranger to his works.

Hiraki Sawa’s first solo exhibition in Taiwan is entitled TERRAIN. This term can be understood as a realm with its boundary. He developed the conception of this exhibition from the experience of watching his mirror reflection at his tender age. At that moment, he firstly sensed his own existence and formed his subjectivity when he saw himself as an integral body in the mirror, which made him a little bit terrified yet slightly excited. This conception echoes his recent work Envelope, in which he installed three large mirrors in different positions at the exhibition venue and let these mirrors reflect the projected images. The viewers can understand the laterally reversed texts only by looking at the mirror images. The artist separated the external real world from the virtual one in the mirrors. He is deeply fascinated with the question that whether his mirror image and the reflected video are real or virtual.

Hiraki Sawa’s works have been not only creating the viewing experience in which the virtual and the real intersect but also providing a strange yet fascinating atmosphere. Situating the viewers in the “terrain” amidst the virtual and the real, he expects them to contemplate whether visual satisfaction or spiritual internalization defines the existence of a human being. In addition to a two-channel video work, the exhibition also presents his magnum opuses such as Did I ? and Sleeping Machine II. The art forum will take place at 3 p.m. on 11 April 2015, followed by the opening party at 4 p.m. Hiraki Sawa will attend these events, sharing his career trajectory and experience with the visitors. We sincerely invite you to this elaborately organized exhibition, where you will be inspired by the artist’s ingenuity.
