Vision’s Ground Zero

Text/ Wang Sean

The blank is the trigger of imagination, such as the canvas or foundations for the action of painting (also drawing), which explains the name of exhibition “Vision’s Ground Zero”; starting from zero, when a work had completed, another meaning has restarted. From zero to some value (number of measurable things or not, so does the language could be,) Vision’s Ground Zero reveals the action of looking at the painting on the instant.

My works have different façade, I don’t want to reiterate the subject matters or modes I had done; each work is unique and independent, but they do link among some pieces. I regard painting as a process of research, so the trace of processing the experience is more important than having the painting done.

I spent some times to think and experiment on those works, and I questioned myself: “how should those small but yet complete works to be done?” It’s not merely to fable a story or to fill out the canvas with colors, it’s a self dialectical process. Those themes on my works are from my daily life, the relationships in between and how to include them into my creations are my concern in visual art composition.

The action of painting is like the linguistics which is about how to express a something. The process of completing a painting is to describe the meaning of some figures, images or form and it belongs to vision. To understand the expression through vision is what I am interested in. We can get some satisfaction from a painting is because we recognize it from the visual description, and sometimes we cannot tell anything from it.

The shapes painted on the canvas are abstract which for example, we cannot draw or paint an actual star in the sky. This is the moment when imagination appears on the painting which is my major concern in my creations. Those blanks on my paintings are the key for viewers to open a different and yet wider space of imagination. It’s the conclusion of both imagination and process of creation.
