Chen Sung-Chih - 2012 Solo Exhibition
by Project Fulfill Art Space (PF Art Space)
Location: Project Fulfill Art Space
Artist(s): CHEN Sung Chih
Date: 9 Jun - 15 Jul 2012

I should have given the exhibition a proper title! It seems necessary that all remarkable things should have specific titles so that each of them would leave a special imprint in our minds. However, when I repeatedly looked at these bits and pieces that were gathered and remade by me, I could only glimpse at their characterization with these remnants, things from the space and time I have never participated. I know they would merely become parts of the brief encounter with you in the exhibition at the end of the day. Since it is so practical in essence, why not taking these fragments as an assembly of Sung-chih Chen’s reflection. Therefore, this exhibition is left without any titles.

The exhibited works here revolve around the contemplation on the rationalized observations, which trigger the sensibility and awareness toward the minute and delicate things within the continuity of time and space. The random compound material embodies a kind of combination and delineation of form and signification, which paints a spiritual silhouette voicing the idea—both the object and the “I” are tiny and vast as the earth under the sky. In between the various focal points, through the discoveries and positioning of the delicate fragments, one reflects on the aesthetics of low material originated from contemplating on the multi-interaction and interweaving between material and spirituality.

I have observed the destruction of things in our civilized lives at the sites (or in the events) of on-going changing and construction for a long time. It triggered my curiosity toward these frail things. The Delicate Sensibilities series continues my previous method, which focuses on abstract expressions using compound material. In this series of works, these coarse fragments are piled up directly into organic surfaces that are sometimes elaborating, sometimes minimalistic. With these unique spectacles, I aim to bring out the existing exquisite views of life in the viewer’s consciousness. As a matter of fact, these constructed “illusions” are the suddenly glanced “delicate sensibilities” scattered and spread in our daily experience.
