The Viewer, disparu
by MOT/ARTS
Location: MOT/ARTS
Artist(s): Je BAAK, Yeon KIM
Date: 9 Mar - 14 Apr 2013

MOT/ARTS is pleased to announce the first Duo Exhibition of Je Baak and Kim Yeon in Taiwan. From March 9 to April 14 at the venue of MOT/ARTS and ART SALON, the exhibition will show works that exploring together the relationship between viewers and their viewing behaviors.

The history of contemporary Korean art is punctuated by a series of incidents, such as the impact of Western abstract art after The Korean War, and the rise of nationalism and social awareness caused by the rapid changes in the political environment such as the Kwangju massacre in the 80s. In the late 90s, due to government support, social liberation, and the development of the tech industry, it became more common in Korea to use new forms of media for art. Korean artists and their works started to be embraced by the international community, becoming a force to be reckoned with in the field of contemporary art. The two artists at this exhibition both completed their artistic education after the 1990s. Because society had ceased to impose rigid expectations on young artists, they were able to concentrate more on humanistic concerns and discuss the underlying issues in art.

Viewing is the most fundamental question in art. Viewing involves projecting the viewers’ own attitudes, and defines the viewers’ relationships with works of art. Since its establishment in 2008, and with an eye towards international development, MOT/ARTS has always striven to encourage and promote outstanding contemporary Asian artists. In the future, MOT/ARTS will also exhibit more creations made out of new forms of media, sharing the insights and findings of the artists through this newer language. Future foreseen, for a better tomorrow.
