Roaming between dreams and the darkness, between the ancient and the present, between the sunset and the nightfall, the human consciousness reaches the blurriest point, allowing the intermediary of the senses to act around, whether it be in the forms of ‘demons,’ ‘spirits,’ and even 'gods.’
MOT/ARTS is pleased to present Taiwanese lacquer artist Aihua Hsia’s latest solo exhibition, In Between the Dormant and Subliminal, showing the complete works of Hsia’s exhibition in New York and Design Miami/Basel 2010 for the first time in Taiwan. The exhibition opens on Saturday, February 4th and will be on view through Sunday, March 18th.
Hsia employs the ancient lacquer technique “Datsukanshitu” used for making Buddhist statues, which demands strict temperature and humidity conditions. Her sculptural works, paintings and installations embody seemingly contradictory worlds: from the traditional and the modern, to the physical and the subconscious. The unique technique and themes in Hsia’s works bring new expectations of contemporary sculpture for the viewers.
