Main Trend Gallery is going to hold “Beyond the Frontier of Color and Form -The Joint Exhibition of Five Abstract Artists” from November 5th to December 3rd, 2011.

In the late 1950s, the abstract art in Taiwan was going through an innovation witch was led by Li Chun Shen (1912-1984), an early proponent of abstract art in the post-war years. Li Chun Shen broke through the form of art creation and promoted the innovation of art education, and he inspired many young artists, whom later founded the art groups such as: the Oriental Art Society, the Fifth Month Art Group, Freedom Art Society, etc. After going through the pondering and the transformation in 1970s, the abstract art in Taiwan stepped in a new stage and reached the second peak of the development of the abstract art in Taiwan from the 1980s onwards. During the period, Taiwan underwent radical political changes in its political, social and cultural fabric. Since the 1980s, Taiwanese art has been gradually moving in tune with the international trends. Different from the former art trend which most emphasized on nation emotion, artists began to present the feelings of natural, environment and their motherland with abstract art; meanwhile, through the messages from their artworks, the diasporic experience and the imagination of home are displayed.

This exhibition presents five abstract artists: Lee Tsai Chien, Tsong Pu, Chu Teh I, Hu Kun Jung, and Kevin Yu. These Five artists all have devoted themselves to abstract creation since 1980s. With their diverse and solid foundation of abstract art, they maturely combine the western abstract thoughts with eastern spiritual philosophy; furthermore, they produce vivid artworks on the base of mature technique.

Lee Tsai Chien’s abstract sculpture usually presents the element of “Quantity and Form.” Lee’s works represent the aesthetic discourse of Asian artists by combining the oriental historical philosophy with the western rational abstract formation.

Tsong Pu’s way of expression is substituting the brush with a one centimeter square chop to express color and content. Tsong Pu uses the process of repeatedly stamping as a metaphor of the experience and feeling for life.

Chu Teh I’s abstract artwork usually presents two comparative themes: sentimental and rational abstract art. Moreover, he tries to find the compatibility of these two abstract art to establish his own art style.

Hu Kun Jung’s artwork are full of musicality, and develop a non-plane vision from the plane composition.

Kevin Yu’s early artworks follow the artistic technique of abstract art. The artworks express Kevin’s feeling about people and the natural by irregular shapes. Furthermore, his artworks shows his exact art spirit through lines and colors, just like a unique movement.

When artists were no longer satisfied with expressing their messages by concrete, actual objects, the abstract art was born. A century after, in spite of the sharp contemporary art trend, abstract art steadily carries the artists’ ultimate searching by its inner spirit and unique art form. Like Piet Mondrian once said "The truly modern artist is aware of abstraction in an emotion of beauty."
