Shigeo FUKUDA biography | artworks | events

Born in Tokyo in 1932, he graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (now Tokyo University of the Arts) in 1956, where he majored in Design. He created posters for numerous official events both in Japan—for example, the 1970 World’s Fair in Osaka—and abroad, and also participated in signage planning and public space design. He won awards and served as judge at international poster competitions in the Czech Republic, Poland, the United States, France, Finland, Bulgaria, Russia and Mexico. His awards and honors include Gold Prize at the Warsaw International Poster Biennale (1972), Recommended Artist’s Award from the Ministry of Education (1976), Mainichi Art Award (1986), induction into the New York Art Directors Club (ADC) Hall of Fame (1987), Meritorious Service Prize for Design from the Ministry of Trade and Industry (1997), Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon (1997), Iwate Prefecture Distinguished Service Award (2001), New York School of Visual Arts (SVA) Master Series Award (2002), induction into the Tokyo ADC Hall of Fame (2006) and the Masaru Katsumi Award (2007). He was Japan’s representative to Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI), Japanese member of the Royal Society of Arts, Tokyo ADC committee member, board member of Japan Design Committee, and board member of the DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion. He taught in the Design Course of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, and guest-lectured at Kanazawa College of Art, Osaka University of Arts, Nihon University and Nagoya Zokei University of Art & Design. In China, he served as arts advisor at Tsinghua University, guest professor at Northwestern Polytechnic University and Sichuan University, and professor emeritus at Jilin Fine Art Institute; in Taiwan, he was professor emeritus at Tung Fang Institute of Technology. From 2001 until his death in January 2009, he served as president of the Japan Graphic Designers Association Inc. (JAGDA).
