To celebrate 5th anniversary, KCUA Art Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. The exhibition will show 40 works including new pieces, and this is the largest exhibition of Apichatpong in Japan for now. 

The exhibition is based on the one at Stenersen Museum, Oslo, in 2013, with the same title, and as adding new works, it is reorganized. From 'Windows' in 1999 to 'Fireworks' in 2014, various video works as well as photograph will be on view. 

Many of Apichatpong's works are made in Isan, the northeastern provinces in Thailand, and those cover superstition, personal memory, dream, unconsciousness, memory of the forest in the districts. Apichatpong said that he is strongly attracted by light and memory in the forest as well as has a desire and a phobia about remembering everything at the same time. 'Photophobia' can be analyzed as 'longing' for light and 'fear' after it. 

In Apichatpong's works, there is less an expository part constantly while more lyrical and meditative video expression can be found. Also, it is not revealed directly, but many social issues in Thai society of today, such as young generation, immigration, difference in economy and politics, are behind the video works. Such characteristics fascinate many people.
