Taka Ishii Gallery Kyoto is pleased to present, “unión de… (The completion of Casa Barragán)”, an exhibition by Noritoshi Hirakawa. Hirakawa is an internationally-exhibiting artist based in New York.

unión de…”(which means human and space), associate each other to be as part of their modes of life as union, in all aspects. If the need or value from the phenomena an architect believes in is adjustable or takes into consideration of human(s), then the architecture can probably be meaningful to exist. At the same time, I believe it will be very important to project the spaces of architecture from the point of view of the union in the art project. And then it will make possible to create a completion of the architecture by presenting mental sensations for indicating the assumption of the architect in the images. So, my proposal for the art project “union de…” is not to make the assumption as the architecture, but the architecture as a part of the assumption of union with human(s) through Casa Barragán in Mexico City.

Hirakawa’s Unión de… is an art project comprising photographs and a modern dance performance, which takes the occurrence of mutual human exchange at the Luis Barragán House and Studio as its subject. Staged in the Barragán House and Studio, which incorporates natural elements such as natural light, wind, water, the sky, and plants, the piece, which features Mexican dancers and performers, visualizes the synergy effects created between narrative elements and perspectives on boundaries that characterize Hirakawa’s work. Unión de… simultaneously expands human sense perception and examines the true essence of the architecture of the Barragán House. After the project was presented in 2012, a collection of Hirakawa’s photographs of the performance unión de… Interactional Casa Barragán was published through Hatje Cantz. An exhibition of the photographs will now be exhibited in Kyoto, sister city to Guadalajara, where Barragán was born.
