“A Place beyond Reach” is a series of recent works by artist He Wei in 2010. His work is known for its poetic and fairy-tale expression of sentimentality. Through the subtle combination of warm, cold, palpable and vague hues, and via mottled and uneven textures, He Wei creates, using a translucent and flowing display of colors, an intangible spiritual realm far removed from reality. Different from intuitionistic, powerful and concise imagery often seen of late, He Wei’s canvas is dimly discernable and filled with a sense of melodic rhythms. His work more often depicts an inner imago, a spiritual longing. Born in the 1980s, the artist is somewhat different from his peer artists in that he only touches upon novelties and the unusual without going further. With a morose tendency and idealistic in nature, the artist is especially sensitive; at the same time, he is calm and unperturbed. He indulges himself in the unruly transition between reality and dreamland, which results in his romantic, illusionary and suspenseful “spiritual scenery” …
