The 11th Hour - An Exhibition of Contemporary Art from India / and its Diaspora
by Tang Contemporary Art
Location: Tang Contemporary Art - Beijing
Date: 12 Jun - 1 Aug 2010

The 11th Hour exhibition begins to mark some notations of countenance, of intelligent configurations that unmask the living within hardened lines of control - a series of cultural texts that heighten the limits that haunt us in our anxiety before the news hour and the constant loss of value. The 11th Hour is a curated project of artists’ works from India and its diaspora.  It is a series of questions about legacies, especially the forgotten ones, as they form a mass of collective criticality – based on observations of being here, being cornered and in a state of continuous anxiety.

The exhibition of works by ten artists, which includes two sets of artists who work in pairs, is the first comprehensive articulation of the impending fate of countries and the cosmopolitan condition in waiting. The works were selected for their ability to immerse the audience in an understanding of the conditions of stress into which we have been led by painful explosions of boom economies and austerity measures, of false reasons and stagnant haunted policies. Here, we move with everything else that seems to be moving, endlessly towards that which resembles a centre full of sorrow. We remain addicts of this capital, a coalition of warring partners and the constant screaming that results in the quickness of global cataclysm.

Many have questioned “is this the world I wish to see?”
Parts of Asia, again, lie damaged by the rush to instill western democracy in the region - a sense of justice arrives highly emotionally charged yet sometimes is rendered meaningless as we gawp shamelessly at the excessive damage caused in the process of another suicide bomber’s counter attack.

A broader picture is difficult to see as we peer past the gruesome details and figures that haunt our perforated lives as we continue to be constant consumers of acts of cruelty in a world of 24 hours’ reportage and cinematic turns with their disparate attempt to use the Afghan Generation as an outline for contemporary entertainment.
These and other considerations now form the awareness of the 11th Hour.
