In the man-made white sunshine, cone shadow and sundial with a label, you fly to this direction. ( quoted from Nie Luda)

My sense organs become active when seeing the oils by Zhao Liang. I ask myself what kind of feeling do I have for his paintings? The most interesting thing is that I just use another way to explain his point of creation not through the characteristics of the paintings. The way I employ is film. It reminds me of an old Japanese film “ Naked Island “. Naked Island here means an isolated island. A couple who are living in this island have to cross the sea and carry the drinking water from the opposite island. The hard labor work makes them low profiled and simple. They work very hard and hardly talk to each. Passing through the long and empty street, walking on the ridge of field, the couple carries the water in tandem. On the boat back to their home, they smile at each other and don’t talk to each other. They have a longing for the bumper harvest and totally ignore the beautiful landscape around them.

By using the plain and repeated action, Zhao Liang’s works reflect the harsh reality and uncertain future just like the plot of “ Naked Island”. In Zhao Liang’s paintings, images are created and scrapped off repeatedly like the daily repeated action in life. It looks vapid but necessary. It is a kind of energy, visible and invisible, touchable and untouchable. The repeating action likes a ritual. During the repetitive process of creating and scraping off, the attraction becomes more and more appealing. It is a growing process of self-cognition. It can push our imagination forward . Through the creating and clearing up the images, Zhao Liang is looking for introspection inwardly. It is a ritual of idealism to point to the future world.

Certainty and uncertainty grows with mutual respect. Subject matters such as crystal lamp, scepter, ancient painting and shark reveal the extension of this emotion. What really important is the spirit these subject matters embody. It is a self-expression of artist Zhao Liang. The form and structure of images is uncertain. Their seriousness is cleared up. Just like the painting of a corpulent man standing on the spherical surface, he pretends to be fine while on the edge of falling down. Zhao Liang’s works activize viewer’s strong interest to find the exciting details hidden in his oils.

Zhao Liang puts on his thinking cap and conducts an experiment in the silent introspection. It reveals his uncertain of the characteristics of painting. It is an attempt to obscure and clear up the language and functionality of painting. He presents his way of thinking to viewers and makes a dialogue with them. This kind of expression is more like a return to zero. His thinking is much influenced by ancient Chinese philosophy “ Yijing” ( Book of Changes). By using different ways to weaken the effects material has made, he creates tempting works
