Crying (2008) by YIN Jun
200 x 200 cm
Oil on canvas

Yin Jun, an "alternative" artist, although without any formal art education, has been creating imaginative oils for more than two years.

His work has been both criticized and admired. When criticized his work is said to be irregular and cartoonist. But clearly he is in a determined exploratory stage, similarly to that encountered and experienced by many talented Dutch artists of other past generations.

He received his early art inspirations from his family. He says he is often guided by his elder brother and has been touched and influenced by the work of other artists. Yin Jun admits he endeavors to paint the world he understands and obviously pursues his own distinctive artistic language.

The artist's work are characterized by some simple symbols such as a round head, big mouth with such aqueous subjects as sweat, nasal mucus and tears. These elements create a strong visual effect. Exaggerated cigar, super microphone and fashionable adornments are featured in his work, symbolizing the openness of today's society. He implants the adult's mind into the child's body and expresses the very common reaction and human emotion of children, of crying.

The symbol "Crying" is regarded as an alternative and a new visual language in contemporary Chinese art. Currently other popular artistic languages include cynical realism created by Fang Lijun, foolish laughter in Yue Minjun's oils, facial expression of morbid languishment featured in Yin Kun's works, and the extreme illusion drawn from the work of Liu Baomin.

Yin Jun's powerful and unconstrained style is based on his natural and naive characters. According to his remarks, he creates with a happy mind like a child and a clear head like an onlooker.

Some say Yin Jun owes his success to the current, perhaps temporary, flourishing art market. Others say that his special experience of life and his creativity in establishing a new visual image will be especially recognized hereafter. Undoubtedly he will be the center topic of people’s conversation, admiration and evaluation for a long time.

Living in such a unique period, he stands out as a feature artist in contemporary Chinese art circles.
