Doll No.27 by WANG Yang
150 x 120 cm
Oil on canvas

Complex of Doll – Oils by Wang Yang

By using the image "Doll" artist Wang Yang expresses his understanding of a particular period in Chinese history of socialism.

People born in the 1970s are regarded as the generation of crevice since they have grown up during a transitional period from revolution to reform. They have had to adjust themselves to the changes of the time constantly, and hope to keep up with the changes. In order to avoid embarrassing situations, they have begun to think deeply about their life and use a whole new way to display their thoughts, "The Cruelty of Youth".

In Wang Yang's early works, the golden hair symbolizes the glory of  socialism. The window behind doll and the eyes of doll glint in the sun. The dramatic red eyes and a dazzling badge with a head portrait of Chairman Mao bring people's memory back to a specific period of China . These historical symbols serve as foils to doll's firm and enthusiastic eyes.

Different from the current political pop forms, Wang Yang uses popular image and historical symbols to show his artistic language. The combination of these two elements creates a new art form; realistic expression along with the cartoon image making the composition rich and interesting. The keynote color gold implies strong gumption. Doll looks forward with a feeling of adoration towards socialism. Wang Yang skilfully handles the relationship between the image and reality. Viewers can feel the unique artistic characteristics conveyed by the artist.

In these recent works, a lovely and energetic doll with a bald head becomes the centerpiece of the painting. Its active mind and specific environment sets a scene of history. Even the blindfolded doll still cries out. It seems that the clarion call has been made.

Doll become vivid and emotional with eyes looking firm and tenacious. It reveals a determination and fighting spirit beyond words.  Rising arms and clutched fists show the determination to defend ideal and faith. Living in today's consumption times, the artist is powerless and cannot find his place in this commercial and lust-stained reality. So he finds sustenance in that simple and specific period.

The artist expresses his recollection of history embodying the power of collectivism. It also implies a cherished memory and a tribute paid by the emerging powerful generation.

Artist Wang Yang has a complex of doll. In his eyes, doll is no longer a toy. He makes it alive with strong power and put it into an unforgettable specific period in Chinese history. To him, doll symbolizes youth, hope and childlike innocence.  What we need today in this complicated society is an innocent mind without stains and a firm character.
