Beginning 14 November, the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain, Paris will present L’Ombre du Fou Rire, the first solo exhibition of Yue Minjun’s work at a European museum. Featuring nearly 40 paintings from collections around the world, as well as an array of drawings that have never been shown to the public, the exhibition reveals Yue Minjun’s singular and complex aesthetic. Characterized by enigmatically laughing characters rendered in bright colors, his paintings reinvent the grotesque, expressing an ironic and jaded vision of contemporary China and the human condition in the modern world.
