Location: Galerie Urs Meile, Beijing
Artist(s): Pierre GONNORD
Date: 17 Apr - 19 May 2010

The photographs presented in this exhibition include two very important series from the work of Pierre Gonnord, UTOPIANS and GYPSIES. The characters from the first series are mostly from Madrid and each of them is part of an underprivileged lower class; in general elderly men, homeless and without family.

On the other hand, there are the Gypsies, almost all of them residents of the Sevillian neighbourhood “3000 dwellings (3000 viviendas)”, where this ethnic group is located, being absolutely isolated from Sevillian society.

All of Pierre Gonnordʼs characters arenʼt represented by themselves—they are prototypes of the group they belong to.

Pierre Gonnord was born in 1963 in Cholet, France. Since 1988 he has lived and worked in Madrid. He was awarded with the prizes L ́Oreal Photography Award, Madrid (2003), and Purificación García Award, 3rd place, Circulo de Bellas Artes, Madrid (2004). His works have been collected by the University Salamanca, Spain, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, USA, Maison Europeenne de la Photographie, Paris and many others. He has had many solo exhibitions in Madrid, Seville, Lisbon, Paris, Barcelona as well as numerous group exhibitions in Spain, Switzerland, Italy, France, and the USA among others.

Exhibition presented in collaboration between Juana de Aizpuru Gallery (Madrid) and Urs Meile Gallery (Beijing) and Caochangdi PhotoSpring. Exhibition supported by instituto Cervantes. This exhibition was featured during "Les Rencontres dʼArles" 2008 and was part of Christian Lacroixʼs curated special guests exhibition.
