Monologue
by Asia Art Center (Beijing)
Location: Asia Art Center, Beijing
Artist(s): GUO Jian
Date: 4 Jun - 5 Jul 2011

"Most of the time I am with myself, and gradually I get used to having meal alone and say good morning and night to the mirror. I have got used to playing alone or indulging in a personal memory." Guo Jian, the post-80's generation, often introduces himself in such a way. Guo was born in Shijiazhuang of Hebei Province in 1982, and most of his paintings derive from his own experiences, reflecting a unique living and internal state of this generation: expecting to meet again after every parting, while every reunion means the parting. Lingering from one side to another, this is a fragment which will never end. Perhaps bearing loneliness is the way this generation grows up, just like what is shown in the paintings, bringing spectators a period of time, meditation, and enjoyment.

Seemingly works of Guo enable people to associate scenes of film clips, be it the early painting The Nutcracker, or the recent A Sickness Called Missing or Polaroid series. In which there is always a protagonist, and this he or she represents self, the missing one or even the missed one. With his sensitive and unique perspective, Guo switches the creation of his works from "looking" and "being looked", bringing spectators more different emotional experiences expressing loneliness and regrets or sweetness and expectations. Speaking of nature of paintings, what Guo pursues is a genuine creative idea. He abandons the complex expression and depicts fragments having countless ties with the reality with fine, smooth and determined brush stroke. The recent Polaroid series record important moments and memorable days in life. Pictures full of memories and the unmatched, valuable images are expressing the inner monologue of the artist; handwritings in blank spaces are unbosoming endless miss and expectations.

Asia Art Center (Beijing) is pleased to launch "Monologue"--Guo Jian Solo Exhibition on 4th of June presenting about 20 extraordinary paintings from A Sickness Called Missing or Polaroid series. Guo, sensitive and sentimental, is telling the inner world of the post-80's generation with his paintings. Those rich emotions experienced, sorrow and loneliness as well as dolefulness and sadness, are appearing before our eyes vividly, arousing our memory of past days and the monologue buried in our heart.
