Refocus: Dragon

Date: 23 Apr - 1 May 2011

From my perspective, an artist makes split-second individual choices that irrevocably determine the outcome of his/her artistic output and practice. Cartier-Bresson called this „the decisive moment.‟ My new series, Refocus: Dragon, refers to this act of choosing in a split second a particular frame, capturing what only I have seen. In my new series, I‟ve gone in search of “dragons” as they appear in unexpected places around Beijing. In chasing dragons, I discovered many things. And found many new dragons made to look old. Why embellish already old sites with fake new dragons? Why does the dragon appear more often than we may realize? Does the dragon give us a warm sense of familiarity and personal orientation? I am collecting visual dragon imagery around Beijing and literally enlarging the pixels to refocus my data, to more closely capture my split second choices during my on-going investigation.
