From the curator Matthew J. Fox

Fitness, friendship and a broken leg. Badminton can be a funny old game. There are a great deal of variables and potentialities that can contribute to the outcome of a badminton match yet none prove as essentially decisive as where the shuttlecock lands. Its point of fall.

The artists in this exhibition have all landed in Beijing. Hailing from all over the country, they have become friends who often eat and drink together. They have similar interests, hobbies and characters. They play badminton together. And they all paint.

A prevailing tone of realism informs the majority of their work, but despite this and their commonalities of living, each artist has a very distinctive style, reflecting unique approach and individual aesthetic interpretation. These stylistic disparities are united with the artists’ strong bond of camaraderie and shared life experience.
