Location: Daegu Art Museum
Artist(s): BOOMOON
Date: 24 Oct 2013 - 26 Jan 2014

Boomoon is a photographic artist who was born in Daegu in 1955, and currently works in Sokcho and Seoul. In 1975, while studying photography at Chung-AngUniversity in Seoul, he made his debut as a photographer, presenting his first solo show at the Press Center in Seoul. His early works addressing urban scenes with an expressionist visual language provoked a sensation in the Korean photography world of the 1970's. Boomoon developed a neutral attitude toward objects, based on his long insight into photography. Since the late 1980s he has firmly built a unique world as a photographic artist, encapsulating the vast scenes of nature with an absence of humans.

Refusing to employ photographic image as device for message or narrative, he concentrated on the relation between photographer and his subject matters: the artist's attitude and the problematic of perception. Boomoon's aesthetic attitudes eventually founded on the self-reflection, is more evident in his landscape photography. His works are different from the other contemporary landscape photographs which reflect the era by documenting scenes of civilization. He considers nature as a field where we expand our cognition, reminding us that nature was always a prominent place for thinking and artists.

This exhibition Constellation shows his major landscape series, produced after the 1990s, such as Stargazing, In the Woods, Sansu, On the Clouds, Naksan, Byeongsan, Northscape, and To the Stones. Images taken from different places create a third place in a thoughtful installation and make a “constellation” with the eight exhibition hallsof the Daegu Art Museum. This large-scale exhibition gives a comprehensive overview of Boomoon's art, shedding light on the issue of perception and properties of image. The serial pieces, recomposed in the architectural space of the Daegu Art Museum, will provide viewers with a new aesthetic experience and an opportunity to reconfirm his importance as a photographic artist.
