Sanbengzi: Chinese Perspectives and German Reflection.
The theme of this show is the three-wheeled motor bikes often seen in Beijing. Each of these two artists looked at this inexpensive method of transportation from different perspectives.
Sanbengzi driver Mr. Zhong is forty-eight year old resident of Beijing. Mr. Zhong used to live near Jianguomen, but now he lives close to the Fourth Ring Road.
Q: How long have you been working as a sanbengzi driver?
A: Three years.
Q: How far can you drive with your sanbengzi?
A: 20 km. Once I drove with my family from Beijing to Hebei province. I don‟t take passengers on such long rides.
Q: Who are your passengers?
A: Mostly South Koreans and art students.
Q: If you had enough money, what kind of car would you like to drive?
A: An Audi would be great or a Volkswagen (laughs).
Q: What are your working hours?
A: I start in the morning, then again in the afternoon. Sometimes I work all day.
Q: How long have sanbengzis been on the streets of Beijing?
A: The sanbengzi is a modified sanlunche (tricycle). The sanlunche has no roof and has been around for more than twenty years. Stainless sanbengzi have been around for five years.
Q: How much do you earn per day?
A: A little over 100 RMB.
