Out of a fondness for and a sense of adventure, Man Tao’s day is divided into several stages; in the morning he works through his India miniature paintings, and after lunch he continues making preparations for this solo-exhibition, Stone Rose. The primary materials he uses are mineral pigments and Chinese xuan paper. Countless flowers appear in his paintings, which he calls "stone roses", and some of his paintings seem to be the direct result of his fondness for classical western art, while others seem to be a tableau of the English countryside. What’s certain is that the fictional is more apparent than the actual. Man Tao’s art wanders amidst classical western traditions, Chinese artistry and Indian miniature paintings, free from restrictions and self-doubt. Perhaps this is what is referred to as "Post-Modernism".
