Wu Long and his Gewu Photography
by Rosie Art Space
Location: Rosie Art Space
Date: 19 Apr - 17 May 2010

A combination of modesty and a genuine desire to observe and understand the world mark the work of Wu Long. The eye of the camera is both his means of that investigation and “an eye to hide behind.”

The world we see through our eyes and that which we see through the lens of the camera is irreducibly subjective. There is no possibility of an objective view.  However, the camera always gives us something extra, something beyond what the human eye sees, that the viewer experiences as a revelation in the photograph.  The vision contained in Wu Longʼs images is a product of both the artistʼs eye and the camera ʻs eye. Wuʼs photographs see through and see beyond... But there is another element. Wu Long is an artist who uses a means of expression – the camera- developed in 19th Century industrial Europe. But he remains a Chinese. He sees the word shyly, obliquely.  His photographs connote rather than denote. Wuʼs camera provides him with a layer of protection when he sees and explores the world. He has a child-like quality; it is as if he hides behind his camera as a child might hide behind a curtain. But from this vantage he can see what others miss.

The photographer was raised in an artistic environment, which contributes to his sensitivity. Perhaps that is common to all with a rich inner world. But this inwardness of Wu Long, when brought to bear on the art of photography, makes his work absolutely unique.  For all this, Wu Longʼs images are imbued with a strong humanism. His camera endows everything it sees with something like a soul. An old cigarette packet, a fallen leaf: even objects seem to have their own stories, their own lives. They live, but are expressions too of the soul of the artist. Wu Longʼs interpretation of the beauty of the world brings the viewer in direct contact with life.
