JOSé Drummond biography | artworks | events

Works with video, photography, installation and painting.

His works are elaborated between the realm of memory and the realm of experience, with the use of a visual vocabulary that addresses singular aspects of identity and/or multi-personality. The thoughts, dreams and hopes of the ‘persona’ and where does the alter ego manifest itself. Self-explanatory the questions raised are often left unanswered.

His body of work point to the idea that one can’t easily conceive an own interpretation without being hindered by reality. The possible seems true but seems to exist with many deceptions and fictions. There’s an absolute proposition that lies of how ambiguous identity and reality are.

This thematically interrelated material of memory and respective projection is aesthetically resilient. Each work has it’s own firm uniqueness with a particular informal language where the notions of the media are stretched supported by a theoretical perspective. The plastic decisions are done via retakes and variations increasing the dynamic between audience and author, objectifying and investigating the duality that develops on each different interpretation.

This use of specific combinations and certain manipulations create different meanings and contexts directly responding to the surrounding environment and using experiences as a starting point, often these are framed instances that would go unnoticed in their original context. These experiences result in visual notes incorporating time as well as space – one illusory universe that slowly emerges from it.

Dreamlike images in which the possibility of the annulment of a fixed identity is the focal point where reflections, mirrors, turnings, spinning around and disequilibrium are used as an operational method.

His latest series of works look for sensation of numbness, vertigo and disorder as sources of pleasure. The game is established by the relationship created between visibility and invisibility. The foundation of the game is the separation of what is unseen. The unplanned reception of its rules, bring us back to experience a sensation of absence.
