Games: Young Chinese Artists
by White Box Museum of Art
Location: White Box Museum of Art
Date: 22 Jan - 27 Feb 2011

"Game" is a long established word which has the same general concepts in the culture of east and west. The definitions from the western philosophy are continuing the meaning of this word. The meaning of game basically infers to the daily activities through our lives. However, from the eastern culture, they put another meaning in the word game, that is "to game with the scent of art", and "Liu Yi"(the ancient Chinese traditional six art forms) is the unity understanding of this daily activity with art. At the same time, the form of daily activities can be very recreational, so the word itself has more open meanings for us to define and discover. However, we cannot actually define everything’s nature, because there is no “prime definitions” for everything’s nature. Therefore, we cannot define the nature of “game”.

Among all those things, every single human behavior and activities can be judged as a kind of game, and we all understand that every game had its rules and regulations. Because every internal awareness has its own external standard. Therefore, no daily experiences can be proven without the objective nature.

Back to the origin, if we see it from the angle of the history of art and human, we can simply found out that art originated from games. Under the social & culture environment of today, art is actually been considering as the "ultimate" form of game. Today, many Chinese young artists (or young artist groups) start to become very active on the stage of independent creations. They do not care about any "unified" values (nor do they need any), and also they do not need any "unified" position, their lives and their art creations are recreational. For them, game is just an origin status, a law for the nature, and the “digestion” of our collective determination under the recreational culture background of this century.

As the time goes by, things change, everything that happens is just like the unpredictable cloud, and the unpredictable games. Only seasons change with the predictable rules of nature.
