Zhao Zhao | Nothing Inside
by Alexander Ochs Galleries Berlin I Beijing
Location: Alexander Ochs Galleries Beijing
Artist(s): ZHAO Zhao
Date: 1 Jul - 31 Jul 2012

In fact, there are only few pictures in this exhibition. And these abstract and figurative pictures, often with banal motifs, are absolutely subordinated. It is about the exhibition space itself, and Zhao Zhao makes it a sculpture. With the aid of a diffuse lighting, he ostensibly turns against the classical exhibition design which uses to centre art works as regards its perception. The twilight ignores the artist¡¯s paintings, it even degrades them by hiding what should be shown. Thus, Zhao Zhao demonstrates in a powerful manner, by purposeful redlining, the deprivation of the art¡¯s right to exist. The result is a spacial sculpture which does not show any perceptions, but which nevertheless is able to constitute them.

This is the second solo show of Zhao Zhao (born 1982 in Xinjiang) at ALEXANDER OCHS GALLERIES BERLIN | BEIJING after his first solo exhibition in Berlin in 2012. The pluralism of style and medium of Zhao Zhao¡¯s works is part of the artist¡¯s critical approach: In order to question the construction of meaning, he challenges reality and its ideological conventions, along with cultural stereotypes and the dominance of particular, largely European, art-historical categories.
