Zheng lianjie now shuttles between New York and Beijing , but his passion for performance art has remained unchanged, just like when he was living in Beijing 20 years ago. From 1990-1993, Zheng and his friends started going to the Yechangcheng Great Wall at Yanshan Mountain and started working on their 100-m long piece of work entitled Wall. In 1993, zheng created Binding the Lost Souls: Big Explosion Great Wall series. These epic performance pieces by Zheng have put him on an important place in the history of Chinese Perfor-mance Art.
In 1996, Zheng migrated to New York. There he created Zero Degree New York (1998, New York) and X-Ray (1999, New York). However, it was his “Family Days”(2000, Beijing) and “Floating Dining Table”(2001,Beijing) which marked his return. Since 2004, Zheng has made yearly pilgrimage trips to Huashan, the famous mountain of Taoism. This has become his workstation where he lives, creates and breathes in the land’s essence. This was also where he has produced “Huashan Project-Peak” and “Huashan Project –Snow” consisting of performance videos, Chinese ink paintings and photographic works.
In the procress of producing Huashan Project-Snow, Zheng jetted off from Beijing and New York feeling lost and bewildered, he attempted to inch closer to nature and find solace for his wandering heart. The piece hints at his return to China and his exploration of the source of religion and traditional culture, it is also where he seeks to strengthen his cultural will. 2006 marked his fourth visit to Huashan. His video work, which was produced using snow and on the valley at 1800m above sea level, expresses the vast, coldness of life and the grandeur of the eternal nature.
Zheng plans to complete the “Huashan Project” within 4 years. This diversified multi-format creation consists of photography, video, performance, sculpture and water-ink paintings. He has already completed two pieces of performance videos and some photographic works and water ink paintings.
