Flights of Fancy
by Swire Properties
Location: Linkbridge, Lincoln House, TaiKoo Place, Island East
Artist(s): Wendy ROCHE, Ken BALL
Date: 14 Sep - 24 Sep 2011

Art photographers Ken Ball and Wendy Roche are leaders in the field of impressionist art photography. For Ken, the legacy of impressionist masters such as Cezanne, Monet and Pissarro is ever-present, and an obvious influence in his recent works; one art collector described Ken as ‘Monet with a camera’.

To Ken and Wendy ‘pure art photography had its boundaries set by the days
of the old wet darkrooms. What you could create — given the constraints of near darkness except for a red safelight dangling from the ceiling, with smelly chemicals and a limited range of photographic paper stocks — was what the Masters in photography in decades past set as the standards for “art photography”. We both still abide by those rules today and use software only to download, crop or to increase contrast’.

Curated by Metta Fine Arts Limited and supported by Swire, the exhibition shall feature impressionist images captured in fleeting moments at travel destination where the artists had visited in the last year including China, Australia, Spain, France, Italy, Holland, Switzerland.

Their images are so much more than an instant of movement vibrating with colour. They give us the sharp edge of visual experience that has been softened and shaped by mood to become the essence of memory. When we look at their work we can transpose our own recollections and our own memories. Ken’s and Wendy’s personal vision has universal application that resonates with our own responses and heightens the awareness of our being in the world.

Between Ken and Wendy, they have published 11 books on the subject of art photography and they both exhibit widely several times each year. Ken also lectures on the subject at two universities in Australia and three in New Zealand and hosts master classes annually in New Zealand.

The latest book by Ken Ball and Wendy Roche “Impressions of Europe” will be released in Hong Kong at the exhibition.
