Gu Benchi’s original and innovative exhibition “Endless Line”, referring to the artist’s remarkable technique, using high-strength polyester threads stretched and fastened with stainless steel nails over acrylic painting on canvas.
The threads are formed into complex, three-dimensional geometric patterns, and catch the light against Gu’s vividly coloured backgrounds. It takes 20 days of very detailed and technical work to create a single 120 x 120 cm artwork.
“Endless Line” was inspired by the fabric market near the artist’s studio on the outskirts of Shanghai. “I loved the visual feast at the messy fabric market, when buying fabrics for my wife. I am interested in the way the colours and textures of fabric work together, and am bored with flat, two-dimensional artwork. My new works are full of texture – both visually and conceptually,” Gu explains.
Gu has participated in numerous exhibitions, including last year’s “Cross-Straits Contemporary Art Exhibition” held at both the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in Taipei and the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. This year, the artist will participate in four important exhibitions: the 12th National Art Exhibition; the Asia Art Exhibition in Nice, France; the China Young Artist’s Exhibition; and the Asia Contemporary Art Show in Hong Kong.
