Consanguineous dialog / The dialog between me and her...
by Fabrik Gallery
Location: Fabrik Contemporary Art
Artist(s): Canson LAU
Date: 27 Jun - 29 Jul 2012

Fabrik is delighted to present Consanguineous dialog / The dialog between me and her... , an exhibition of new work by Hong Kong artist Canson Lau. The exhibition will feature a video installation in three frames with accompanying photo stills.

In the video presented in a continuous loop of monochromatic black and white, Lau's narrative describes the relationship between four characters ("me and three females, which are my mother, my wife and my daughter") through a series of still images to recreate moving motion. "I believe that motions can express and reveal more information than language. Body language is more real and delicate. Having black and white as the two colors that dominate the work relates to the linear relationship from one generation to the next. This inherently contains an element of historical and memorial."

In one of the frames, Lau moves across with one of the characters (wife), blurring and turning the two moving images into one. This movement represents the entanglement of each character conscripted into relationships with the three significant females in his life. Purposefully presented in a low-fi format, Lau emphasizes the endless cycle of familial patterns and complexities.

Canson Lau was born in Hong Kong and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Photography from RMIT University. In 2006, Lau received a Diploma in Fine Art from the Hong Kong Art School and won recognition as Selected Entry for Hong Kong in Olympic Sport and Art Contest in 2008 (Hong Kong Region) in represented Hong Kong in the international phase contest held at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne. He is currently doing his further studies at East Anglia Univer sity in the UK.
