Good Night Analogue, Good Morning Digital
by Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery
Location: Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery
Artist(s): LEE Lee Nam
Date: 17 May - 3 Jun 2013

Good Night Analogue, Good Morning Digital is the second solo exhibition of Korean artist Lee Lee-nam in Hong Kong, featuring his latest series of installation and video work. This exhibition is an extension from Lee’s solo exhibition in Gwangju Museum, one of the important art museums in Korea.

In January 2013, digital code broadcasting has finally replaced the traditional cable analogue broadcasting in South Korea. Through installation and video work, Lee Lee-nam conveys his vision on the transition of ages based on a review of 100 years of contemporary art, from Marcel Duchamp's Readymade (1916), to the Father of Video Art Nam June Paik's Good Morning, Mr Orwell (1984), to the interactive digital art nowadays.

Built on his established art language of reinterpreting the meaning of classical images from masterpieces through video on TV panel, Lee takes a further step in his art development. By marrying found objects and digital technology, Lee creates installation that connotes an analogue spirit. The works look ordinary at first sight, yet later evoke an enigmatic sense and elicit nostalgia and musing about time and technology.

This exhibition seems to offer a farewell to the analogue age, Lee intended to build a new paradigm by conflating digital technology onto analogue systems. It also invites the viewer to ponder on the meaning of memory and history in the passage of time. When almost everything can be saved in digits and can be erased completely in just a few seconds, how analogue system and history matter to us.
