Tomoko Sawada was born in Kobe, Japan, in 1977 and is one of today’s most important contemporary female photographers. She is a recipient of numerous important photography awards worldwide, with works in the permanent collection of many museums such as MOMA and the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York, USA and MAK, Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art in Vienna, Austria.
Sawada's work focuses on disguising herself in the form of multiple women within Japanese society. This could be trendy Gothic Lolita girls, or representations of roles traditionally assigned to the female gender by society. Her work is presented in a highly thought provoking, yet light-hearted nature.
