Born in 1963 in Henan, China, Jiang Congyi is a highly talented female artist and has exhibited in many countries and participated in international art fairs such as Art Basel Miami and Art Forum Berlin. Jiang’s works have also been exhibited alongside with other more well known contemporary Chinese artists such as Zhang Xiaogang and Yue Minjun – placing her in the same credibility and importance as these big names. What is so attractive about Jiang’s female portraits is her style; the outlines of the face are blurred to create a sense of illusion, and her use of predominantly pink shades, the red pouty lips and the coloured star beads sewn across the contrasting black strip of the hat are all characteristics of Jiang’s works. More interestingly, she has portrayed the female from a female’s perspective and her works loosely reflect her views on the social image of today’s Chinese women.
