"Mirrors" is a new series of works by the New York based contemporary Japanese artist, Tomoko Sawada, launched in New York in 2010. A sequel to the Decoration series, Sawada takes a step closer to explore on the boundary between your own appearance and the self image reflected in a mirror. It tackles on the issue of identity questioning how you recognize your own self when you see yourself in a duplicate such as mirror, video and photograph. Each work in this series consists of a paired portrait of the artist’s face in near-identical images. Most of the time, the superficial changes in them are so subtle, such as a slight tilt in the head, that they literally depict mirror reflections, while at times they are more obvious, such as the colour of the blouse. Inevitably, the viewer is drawn to scrutinise each face, in order to spot the differences.
Born in Kobe, Japan in 1977 and now based in New York, USA, Tomoko Sawada is now a recognized name in the contemporary art scene as a photography artist and is a recipient of numerous important photography awards worldwide.
