Market Forces: Response – Summer Pop-up Art Market
by Osage Gallery
Location: Osage Kwun Tong
Date: 17 Aug - 18 Aug 2012

Summer Pop-up Art Market at Osage Kwun Tong marks the closing of the exhibition 'Market Force: Whither Contemporary Art?', a Sigma Project presented by the Osage Art Foundation.

The two-evening night-market is a response to the exhibition and will happen within the exhibition space of ‘Market Force: Whither Contemporary Art?'. The night market combines examinations of the cultural institutions and their typical relations in the society, forms of organisation and self organization, and ruminations on the mechanics and operation of the economic cycle of production, distribution, consumption and exchange.

We have invited art students, graduates and young artists to participate in the art market. There will be thirty pop-up booths and participating artists can freely define, experiment, exchange, trade, perform, giveaway and communicate with the audiences. The price of each artwork has to be below HK$3,000 but all participants have the freedom to express their ideas as well as to decide on the most suitable strategy to run the booth.

These booths are situated in the exhibition space of ‘Market Force: Whither Contemporary Art?', alongside with the artworks by the 13 artists from Hong Kong, Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Participants have raised many questions in their proposals – What is the value of art? Can we quantify the value of an artist? Has the so-called authoritative recommendation or authorization certificate in the art world affected our personal judgment of art? Some argues that the core value of art is to help us find a way of seeing the truth while others satirize the elitism exists in the art market and the ecology of local art scene.

Apart from the direct responses to the exhibition, the night market will also feature ten special stalls which will bring performance, music and food to create a playful atmosphere. Hong Kong artists, including Wilson Shieh, Kacey Wong, Hanison, Lau Hok Shing, will transform themselves into characters such as fortune teller, hawker and craftsman to address political, social and environmental issues through the medium of art and interactions with visitors.

Each booth is a mini, ephemeral, temporary and opened space for creativity. The market provides an opportunity for interactions and a face-to-face experience for participants and visitors. It is a market-within-a-market and an exhibition-within-an-exhibition! Don't miss your chance for the fun-filled experience at Osage Kwun Tong!
