ZHANG Zhen Yu biography | artworks | events

Born in Hunan in 1974.

Graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Art in 1997.Currently lives in Beijing.  In an era such as this, you've learned what knowledge is; you care about things that take place around you and events that happen faraway.  You've developed concern about social issues, acquired the habit of tuning in to the news and reading newspapers.  And you feel a sense of rage, and you don't know why......

Based on the feelings described above, I feel extremely upset when I come across the hypocrisy, sensationalism, lies, and verbal bullying in newspapers and magazines.  Unfortunately, these happen to be the major sources from which most people obtain their so called "social knowledge and information".

I scrape off and alter the information printed in newspapers, magazines, and books, thereby making them lose their original function, leaving only a meaningless shell (corpse).  As a result, after I finish my scraping, these newspapers, magazines, or books no longer function as reading material, and all that remains (or has been added) is the uneven touch of their surface.

Since January 1, 2007, I have decided to use yearly units for my art.  In other words, I will pick one sheet of paper from a specific newspaper (the front page of a daily or periodical newspaper) and scrape off the information.  In 2007, I scraped an entire year of the People's Daily.  In 2008, I worked on the China Daily (English edition).
